About Us

Thanks for stopping by! We’d like to take a minute to introduce ourselves, talk about our journey, and how/why Capoeira Connection came to be. My name is Corey Goodman, but in the Capoeira world, my apelido (nickname) is Pena – it means “feather”. I started practicing Capoeira in 1994 at the age of 12 with Mestre Rodrigo Zerlotti who founded Capoeira Evolução in Austin, TX. In 1997 I met Al Almuelle who came to classes, met Mestre Rodrigo, and partook in the group activities before starting to train in 2007. In 2008 during a trip to Brazil, Al received his apelido, Cadência – “Cadence” in the Capoeira world. When we started Capoeira, there weren’t very many accessible resources in the United States for anything Capoeira related.. especially not instruments.

We started out by learning how to make my own berimbaus using a tree called ligustrum. Corey learned the art of making berimbaus and caxixis from Mestre’s very first student, Scott Baltisburger, and spent the next 10 years honing his berimbau making skills. Al also learned to make berimbaus with us and began playing before having done his first ginga. Corey learned and passed on techniques to other students and anyone interested in learning. However, this still didn’t serve the larger Capoeira community that was probably in the same boat as we were.

Fast forward to 2017, Corey decided to try to establish a way to bridge the gap between Capoeira that was centralized in Brazil, and the satellite communities that had taken root in the United States, by partnering with different Capoeira Professionals around Brazil. In early 2018, Corey teamed up with Al, and together we dove head first into bringing this dream to a reality, and Capoeira Connection was born!

After months of planning, researching, and hard work we made it to São Paulo Brazil in order to find the best Capoeira instruments for our Community. We really wanted to search out and put our hands on everything we were bringing to our community. Instruments that we would have in our own collection… So that’s exactly what we did. Check out the vlog to see how we get hand made Capoeira Instruments from Brazil directly to you.
