Capoeira Oregon is a branch of CTE Capoeiragem, under the leadership of Mestre Dilaho. The CTE Capoeiragem association was created in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil by Mestre Balão. It seeks to preserve the art of capoeira, and to spread Afro-Brazilian art and culture in Brazil and throughout the world.
Rooted in the heritage of the African diaspora, capoeira began as a way for Brazilian slaves to maintain elements of their traditions and cultures. Participants in capoeira play each other in pairs in a circle, or roda, accompanied by instruments such as the berimbau, an Afro-Brazilian musical bow. Playing capoeira in the roda expresses a dynamic principle of axé, or life force, derived from the Yoruba people of Nigeria.
Today, Capoeira has come to incorporate many things from acrobatics to martial arts. It has spread from Brazil, enchanting the world with its dynamic and beautiful movements. Capoeira today is a great way to get in shape while experiencing art and creating community.
